Tito Mboweni, the former Minister of Finance and Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, left an indelible mark on his country before passing away at 65 after a short illness. His legacy is a testament to his tireless efforts to shape South Africa’s economic landscape.


Born on March 16, 1959, in Tzaneen, Limpopo, Mboweni’s journey was marked by resilience and dedication. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) while in exile in Lesotho and later became a key figure in shaping the party’s economic policies.

As Minister of Labour from 1994 to 1999, Mboweni championed collective bargaining and labor courts, laying the groundwork for a more equitable workforce. His subsequent appointment as Governor of the South African Reserve Bank from 1999 to 2009 solidified his reputation as a stalwart of economic stability.

Mboweni’s later years saw him take on the role of Minister of Finance from 2018 to 2021, where he advocated for liberal economic policies, often finding himself at odds with the ruling ANC. Despite controversies, his commitment to South Africa’s growth remained unwavering.

He was cherished for his wit, humor, and humility, earning him the affectionate title “Twitter Chef” for his culinary escapades online.

As South Africans mourns the loss of this exceptional leader, his legacy serves as a reminder of the power of dedication and vision. Tito Mboweni’s life was a testament to the difference one person can make in shaping a nation’s future.
