Mamelodi Sundowns leapfrogged Kaizer Chiefs to reclaim the top spot in the DStv Premiership with a hard-fought 2-1 win at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.
The sold-out clash got off to a blistering start as Ranga Chivaviro's early attempt handed Kaizer Chiefs the lead, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Sundowns pulled level through Lucas Ribeiro's strike, and after before the break, they took control. Ribeiro's pinpoint cross found Iqraam Rayners, who scored the winner despite suspicions of offside.
Kaizer Chiefs pushed for an equalizer, Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, a Yachinne nominee, showcased his exceptional skills with a stunning save from a Castillo header. However contentious referee decisions denied them the equalizing goal, securing Sundowns' 2-1 victory.
The defeat left fans and sport presenters reeling, with many questioning the referee's decisions. Renowned sports broadcaster Robert Marawa tweeted: "South Africa still has amateur referees refereeing a professional league."
Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi sidestepped criticism of the match officials: "I don't want to talk about referees. That's for the specialists."
The champions now sit atop the league with nine points from three matches. Ronwen Williams' impressive display earned him the Man of the Match award.
