In a small village in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, a story of determination and perseverance is making waves. Meet Khetha Halala Biyela, a 33-year-old chicken and vegetable farmer who is defying the odds to follow her dreams.
Born and bred in the obscure O’Buka Reserve Debe area under Mthonjaneni Municipality, Khetha developed a love for farming at a young age. However, due to financial constraints, she was unable to start farming until 2021.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Khetha has successfully started producing vegetables on her own homestead in a one-hectare plot. “I am currently producing vegetables on my homestead in a one hector plot, currently I’m selling lettuce and spinach, I have 1200 growing cabbages, I’m expanding my farm with three hectares but the issue is that I don’t have a proper fencing and inadequate irrigation system, at the moment I’m using community water”, she said.
Khetha’s message to young people out there is simple: “Start with what you have. Don’t wait for the government to provide you with a job. Use your phone to do research.” Despite the challenges she is facing, Khetha believes that she will succeed.
As Khetha battles to overcome the challenges in her path, her story serves as an inspiration to many in her community and beyond. We wish her all the best in her farming journey!
