Nikita Yonela Mpofana (26) is also a victim of Gender Based Violence (GBV), she was physically attacked by her landlord from Mlazi township at Durban on Saturday afternoon, accusing her of stealing his mobicel cellphone. He started to beat her to a point where he stabbed her more than 2 times.

“I came at the house around 3:00 PM, I was extremely tired. My battery died then I went to my neighbor to ask her to charger my phone because my charger was broken and left my phone with her. I got back to my room to rest and slept until it was late afternoon then i woke up and looked for my phone around forgetting that I charged it next door. When I left my room I entered the apartment kitchen, that's where I met with the landlord Tau, I asked him to call for my phone because I lost it unfortunately he didn’t have airtime to call it.
I went back to the room and slept again and told myself that I will search for my phone tomorrow in the morning. At the evening I heard a knock on my door, when I opened it Tau eventually got inside asking for his phone , I told him I’m the one who asked him to call my phone as I didn’t see mine, he didn’t believe me he starts accusing me of stealing his cellphone, he then slapped me and hit me in my face several times, I started screaming asking for help, my neighbor arrived and rescued me” said Nikita.

It was allegedly said that the landlord was drunk and under the influence of drugs. Nikita consciousness didn’t want her to sleep in her room alone after what happened she went to her neighbor and beg her to spend the night in her room but her neighbor without noticing any danger she told her to go inside her room and lock it.

Nikita didn’t get a good night sleep as she thought when she came back to the her room, around 12 to 1 in the morning she heard someone hitting the window and shouting calling her names and threatening her saying he will stab her. Nikita checked by the window, “I saw Tau smoking something that emits smoke” she said. Suddenly Tau kicked Nikita’s door and opened it.

“He got inside my room, he tried to stab me in the head and I dodged with my hand unfortunately my hand got stabbed. He succeeded to stab me as he stabbed my head, hand and eye, he then beat me several times without getting any help, he beat me over 20 minutes and by that time I was bleeding. People came to help me but they noticed that much damage have been done, it is suitable for men to invade, then they rushed to call men’s in the nearest tavern, as fast as they were, I was rescued just like that”.

At the hospital they requested Nikita to call at least a family member and the sister who she gave her phone to charger it, came to her and gave her phone and that was when Nikita remembered that the moment she arrived at the house yesterday her charger was broken and she asked her neighbor to charger it, she then called my sister to attend her at the hospital .

She also mentioned that Palesa helped told her that the time they came back from the hospital at the scene they found Tau sitting down crying and he even begged Palesa to forgive him for what he did. It was stated that Tau also mentioned that he found his cellphone under the couch at his room meaning that he was not telling the truth when he said Nikita stole it.

The case of Physical violence has been opened. Nikita also admitted that those who suffers from abuse need to come out, talk to someone because to keep quiet you could end up committing suicide, and by talking you're also helping someone out there who is also going through the same phase of Gender Based Violence (GBV) , people out there are willing to help the victims. Nikita said she doesn't know where Tau is, he was last seen after the incident. We called the Mlazi police station but the call was not picked up until press time arrived.
